The message from the Chairman, gemaakt door Remko Koopman, geeft een inkijk in het werk en de belevingswereld van de Leidse underground kunstenaar Julius Martin Gartler (1968 – 2008) a.k.a. JAIYS a.k.a. The Chairman. Midden jaren ‘80 behoort hij bij de eerste lichting Leidse graffitikunstenaars ‘Moderne Stijl’ (Style Writing). Vanwege spierdystrofie werd hij midden jaren ‘90 genoodzaakt om nieuwe methodes voor persoonlijke expressie in de publieke ruimte uit te vinden. Hierdoor werd hij een street artist avant la lettre. Heden ten dage zijn Post Graffiti en Street Art uitgegroeid tot wereldwijde succesvolle en erkende kunststromingen. Gartler was een pionier op dit gebied en zijn werk heeft de tand des tijds overleefd. Dit naslagwerk toont een overzicht van het ontwikkelingstraject dat Gartler heeft doorlopen van 1986 tot aan zijn dood.
In 2024 verscheen het boek A message from the Chairman. Wegens de huidige grote belangstelling voor de geschiedenis van Style Writing en Street Art, en omdat er nog veel meer onbekend graffiti-gerelateerd werk van Gartler omhoog is gekomen, werd het noodzakelijk geacht om een tweede publicatie over zijn oeuvre te realiseren. Verwacht geen traditionele kunstpublicatie; dit boek is vormgegeven als een old school blackbook. Het kenmerkt zich door een chaotische collage van analoge fotografie in combinatie met letterstudies, tekeningen, tags en oude krantenknipsels. Inclusief met de hand geschreven duidende teksten door enkele hoofdrolspelers uit de Leidse scene van de jaren ‘80 en ‘90. De stad bezat nog rafelranden, broedplaatsen en jeugdhonken met bijbehorende kunstzinnige en muzikale creativiteit. Een vorm van onbegrensde vrijheid. Deze publicatie is een tijdcapsule van de oerdagen van de Leidse Hiphop- en Graffiti-scene. Rauw en ongepolijst.

The message from the Chairman, created by Remko Koopman, offers a glimpse into the work and experiences of Leiden underground artist Julius Martin Gartler (1968-2008), a.k.a. JAIYS, a.k.a. The Chairman. In the mid-1980s, he was one of the first generation of Leiden graffiti artists known as “Moderne Stijl” (Style Writing). Muscular dystrophy forced him to invent new methods of personal expression in public spaces in the mid-1990s, making him a street artist avant la lettre. Today, Post Graffiti and Street Art have grown into globally successful and recognized art movements. Gartler was a pioneer in this field, and his work has endured. This reference work provides an overview of Gartler’s development from 1986 until his death.
In 2024, the book “A Message from the Chairman” was published. Due to the current surge in interest in the history of Style Writing and Street Art, and because much more of Gartler’s previously unknown graffiti-related work has surfaced, it was deemed necessary to create a second publication about his oeuvre. Don’t expect a traditional art publication; this book is designed like an old-school black book. It features a chaotic collage of analog photography combined with letter studies, drawings, tags, and old newspaper clippings. It also includes handwritten explanatory texts by some key figures from the Leiden scene of the 1980s and 1990s. The city still possessed fringes, breeding grounds, and youth centers, with their corresponding artistic and musical creativity. A form of boundless freedom. This publication is a time capsule of the early days of the Leiden hip-hop and graffiti scene. Raw and unpolished.
